  • Carborane-Derivatized Low-Melting Salts with Ether-Functionalized Cations—Preparation and Properties

  • A new series of low-melting ammonium salts based on the [nido-7,8-C2B9H12]– anion have been synthesized and characterized, and their physicochemical properties including spectroscopic properties, thermal properties, surface properties, solubility, density, viscosity, electrochemical properties, and tribological properties have been studied in detail. In comparison with previously reported carborane-derivatized imidazolium or pyridinium salts, these diether-functionalized ammonium salts display lower phase transition temperatures (Tg = –76 to –57 °C), and four exist as liquids at room temperature due to their flexible alkoxy chains. TGA analysis revealed that the weight loss rates of these carborane-derivatized low-melting salts were ca. 30–80 wt.-% after thermal decomposition, which is different from the traditional RTILs. SEM images showed that the resulting residue had hollow reticular shell morphology, and XPS and XRD analyses indicate that the main components of the skeleton are B2O3 and amorphous carbon. This provides a new strategy for preparing new inorganic porous materials by thermal decomposition of these low-melting salts.

  • Hydrophobic 1-allyl-3-alkylimidazolium dicyanamide ionic liquids with low densities

  • Nine 1-allyl-3-alkylimidazolium ([ACnIm]) or 1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium ([VCnIm]) dicyanamides (DCA) were prepared and characterized, and their physicochemical properties were studied in detail. Except for [AVIm]DCA and [AC4Im]DCA, the other dicyanamides with hexyl or longer alkyl chains on the cation exhibited the characteristic of hydrophobicity. Among them, [AC8Im]DCA and [AC10Im] DCA were found to possess similar densities to water, i.e. 1.007 g cm3 and 0.988 g cm3 at 25 C, respectively. Interestingly, a reversible phase reversion of a [AC8Im]DCA/H2O mixture was observed as the temperature varied. These environmentally-friendly liquid materials have potential applications as precursors for syntheses of conducting polymeric materials.

  • Novel Cyclic Sulfonium-Based Ionic Liquids: Synthesis, Characterization, and Physicochemical Properties

  • A new series of ionic liquids composed of three cyclic sulfonium cations and four anions has been synthesized and characterized. Their physicochemical properties, including their spectroscopic characteristics, ion cluster behavior, surface properties, phase transitions, thermal stability, density, viscosity, refractive index, tribological properties, ion conductivity, and electrochemical window have been comprehensively studied. Eight of these salts are liquids at room temperature, at which some salts based on [NO3] and [NTf2] ions exhibit organic plastic crystal behaviors, and all the saccharinbased salts display relatively high refractive indices (1.442–1.594). In addition, some ionic liquids with the [NTf2] ion exhibit peculiar spectroscopic characteristics in FTIR and UV/Vis regions, whilst those salts based on the [DCA] ion show lower viscosities (34.2–62.6 mPas at 20℃) and much higher conductivities (7.6–17.6 mScm-1 at 20℃) than most traditional 1,3-di-ACHTUNGTRENUNGalkylimidazolium salts.

  • Physicochemical Properties of Nitrile-Functionalized Ionic Liquids

  • A series of ionic liquids (ILs) based on nitrile-functionalized imidazolium, pyridinium, and quaternary ammonium as cations and chlorides and tetrafluoroborate, hexafluorophosphate, dicyanamide, and bis- (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide as anions have been prepared and characterized. The physicochemical properties such as spectroscopic, thermal, solubility, surface, electrochemical, tribological, and toxic properties were comparatively studied. The results showed that the incorporation of a CN group to cations could result in remarkable changes in these properties. The reason resulting in such remarkable differences in the properties may be attributed to the conformational changes in the imidazolium groups caused by the interaction between the CN group with other neighboring cations or anions and the enhancement in hydrogen-bonding interactions due to the incorporation of a CN group.

  • Novel Ionic Liquid Crystals Based on N-Alkylcaprolactam as Cations

  • A novel series of ionic liquids (ILs) based on N-alkyl- -caprolactam as cations [Cn-CP]+ (Cn ) alkyl with different numbers of C atoms; n ) 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, or 18) containing toluene-p-sulfonate [TS]- and methanesulfonate [MS]- as anions have been synthesized via a one-step atom-economic reaction. Characterizations of these ILs by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, variabletemperature powder X-ray diffraction, etc., were conducted. The results showed that the caprolactambased ILs (n≥8) were enantiotropic thermotropic liquid crystals, except for C18-CPMS (monotropic), and displayed smectic A phases. Some properties, such as higher transition enthalpies (e.g., ΔH=83.1 kJ/mol for C18-CPTS), higher specific heat capacities (e.g., Cp=2.85 J/g·K for C16-CPTS) and higher heat storage densities (e.g., sensible heat storage density Es=262.8l MJ/m3 for C16-CPTS; latent heat storage density El=146.0 MJ/m3 for C18-CPTS), were observed. Fluorescence measurements showed that the homologous Cn-CPTS ILs exhibited strong fluorescence behavior. Finally, the test of acute toxicity toward rats showed that these new ILs were less toxic than the popular [BMIm]BF4 IL.

  • Investigation of Physicochemical Properties of Lactam-Based Brønsted Acidic Ionic Liquids

  • Novel lactam-cation-based Bronsted acid ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared through a simple and atom-economic neutralization reaction between a lactam, such as caprolactam and butyrolactam, and a Bronsted acid, HX, where X is BF4-, CF3COO-, phCOO(-), ClCH2COO-, NO3-, or H2PO4-. The density, viscosity, acidic scale, electrochemical window, temperature dependency of ionic conductivity, and thermal property of these ILs were measured and investigated in detail. The results show that protonated caprolactam tetrafluoroborate (CPBF) has a relatively strong acidity with -0.22 of Hammett acidic scale Ho and caprolactam trifluoroacetate (CPTFA) and pyrrolidonium trifluoroacetate (PYTFA) ILs possess very low viscosities, that is, 28 cP and 11 cP, respectively. An investigation of thermal property showed that a wide liquid range (up to -90 degrees C), moderate thermal stability (up to 249 degrees C for 10% of decomposition), and complex polymorphism were observed in these ILs. In comparison to imidazolium-cation-based ILs, the lactam-cation-based Bronsted acid ILs have a relatively lower cost, lower toxicity, and comparable ion conductivity and heat storage density (more than 200 MJ/m(3)). They have wide applicable perspectives for fuel cell devices, thermal transfer fluids, and acid-catalyzed reaction media and catalysts as replacements of conventional inorganic acids.
