• Developments in Gas Chromatography Using Ionic Liquid Stationary Phases

  • Ionic liquids (ILs) have become recognized in gas chromatography (GC) as stable and highly polar stationary phases with a wide application range. Having customizable molecular structures, ILs also offer a particular tunability that provides additional selectivity, and therefore may improve separation for neighbouring analytes. This article presents specific properties of IL phase capillary GC columns, including polarity scale and inner surface morphologies of IL columns. Application of IL phases in achiral and chiral GC, and multidimensional GC, are highlighted.

  • Thanks to their unique properties, ionic liquids are all in the rage as solvents as, for instance, "green" sustainable chemical processes. Recently, two research teams at Umeå University discovered how enzymes can perform their catalytical processes in a switchable ionic liquid. The discovery paves way for enzymatic refinement of cellulose to precious molecules and industrial products. The results have been published in the journal ChemSusChem.

  • In an article in Chemical Engineering, Blake Simmons (Senior Manager of Sandia’s Advanced Biomanufacturing Group and JBEI’s Chief Science & Technology Officer) talks about how the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) has scaled up biomass pretreatment technologies using ionic liquids (salts in a liquid state at ambient conditions) from the bench scale to the 100 L scale using a reactor located at the Advanced Biofuels Processing and Demonstration Unit (ABPDU).

  • Carbon is money. Nowhere is this more evident than in our dependence on hydrocarbons in the form of fossil fuels. Scientists and engineers have been grappling with the question of what alternate carbon sources are available when our demand for fossil fuels eventually outstrips our supply. This challenge has provided motivation to use expertise and equipment available at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, to create technologies that use sustainable carbon sources from biomass.
